Bowl Match-up Breakdown

So which Bowls got it right and are deserving of your viewing time because the rankings of the teams are closely matched? Based on my ranking system only 3 Bowls got their match-ups correct, with a difference of -1.

1 Oregon 12 0 PAC10 BCS Title -1
2 Auburn 13 0 SEC BCS Title -1
21 South Carolina 9 4 SEC Chick-fil-A -1
22 Florida State 9 4 ACC Chick-fil-A -1
34 Miami (Fla.) 7 5 ACC Sun -1
35 Notre Dame 7 5 INDY Sun -1

And what about the other end of the spectrum. Which Bowls got it totally wrong either because of forced match-ups or just selecting on name?

19 Nebraska 10 3 BIG12 Holiday -39
58 Washington 6 6 PAC10 Holiday -39
30 Maryland 8 4 ACC Military -39
69 East Carolina 6 6 CUSA Military -39
12 Nevada 12 1 WAC Kraft Fight Hunger -41
53 Boston College 7 5 ACC Kraft Fight Hunger -41

So there you have the Top 3 and Worst 3 match-ups during the 2010-11 Bowl season. The team that got the biggest shaft is Nevada, who finished 12th in my poll (15th BCS) at 12-1, beat Boise State, but only drew Boston College (7-5) who finished 4th in the ACC Atlantic.

Now with that said, why are there 70 Bowl games? Why, after the NCAA increased the minimum number of games from 11 to 12, did the minimum number of wins remain at 6 to become bowl eligible and not increase to 7? We are now awarding mediocrity and .500 ball. And if you want to keep it at 6 wins, shouldn't teams with 8 wins get a Bowl game before a 6 win team? That's what Temple and Southern California are asking, who finished the year at 8-4 and 8-5 respectively and will be headed home for traditional semester break.

Mythical Championship Breakdown

5 Teams have locked down their spots in the Mythical NCAA D1 Football Championship Bracket by winning their Conference Championship Game, Auburn (2), Oklahoma (9), Virginia Tech (15), UCF (27) and Miami Ohio (47). This leaves 3 openings in the 8-team bracket to be determined by the At-Large Championship Games. The remaining 6 Non-Championship Conference Champions will go head to head to determine who is worthy of the final spots. Oregon (1) will take on Troy (62), TCU (3) will match up with Connecticut (37) and Wisconsin (8) draws Nevada (12).

For posterity sake, let's imagine those games have already happened and that the top seeds won. Or someone can break out their EA Sports NCAA Football 11 and play those games out for me. But let's stick with the former. The 8-team Mythical Bracket would align as follows and would be played in the next week or two on campus of the higher seed.

Oregon (1) vs Miami Ohio (47)
Auburn (2) vs UCF (27)
TCU (3) vs Virginia Tech (15)
Wisconsin (8) vs Oklahoma (9)

From here, the 4 winners will be reseeded, hi to low, and play on New Year's Day in Semi Final action. The winners of the Semi Finals will square off a week later to determine a true National Champion. These three games will be played at neutral sites worthy of champions. Ah, if only this were true it would capture the hearts of all.

Big East Football Expansion

With the expansion of the Big Ten and Pac-10 to 12 teams by 2012, the MWC scrambling to maintain numbers and the depletion of the Big 12 and WAC, only the Big East and Sun Belt remain unchanged in the near future. As a Pittsburgh alumni, I feel it is in the Big East's best interest to expand to 12 teams ASAP before there are no teams left to maintain their own conference. The Big East can do this without depleting any other conference, unlike the aforementioned conferences.

To expand to 12 teams, the Big East should simply 1) secure Notre Dame, whose others sports programs are already members of the conference, 2) reinstate Temple, who was a member from 1991-2004, thus returning the MAC to 12 from 13 teams, 3) add the other two independent teams of Navy and Army. All the added teams are in the primary geographical are that is the Big East.

Notre Dame adds the BIG name and is returning to form under former Big East coach Brian Kelly. Temple has rebuilt their program and is consistently towards the top of the MAC. Navy is a strong program that would typically finish amidst the middle of the Big East. And while Army is not prominent team, they are no worse then the worst of the current Big East, having won at Rutgers this year.

The hardest part of this expansion, next to convincing Notre Dame, Navy and Army to give up their independent status, is divisional alignment. Here are the primary alignments to consider.

East/West
West: Pittsburgh, West Virginia, Cincinnati, Louisville, Notre Dame, South Florida
East: Syracuse, Connecticut, Army, Rutgers, Temple, Navy

North/South
North: Syracuse, Pittsburgh, Notre Dame, Connecticut, Army, Rutgers
South: West Virginia, Cincinnati, Louisville, Temple, Navy, South Florida

NW/SE
NW: Syracuse, Pittsburgh, West Virginia, Cincinnati, Louisville, Notre Dame
SE: Connecticut, Army, Rutgers, Temple, Navy, South Florida

Old/New
Old: Syracuse, Pittsburgh, West Virginia, Rutgers, Temple*, Connecticut
New: Cincinnati, Louisville, South Florida, Notre Dame, Navy, Army
*Temple was an original member 1991-2004

Or any mix of new schools and old schools. Considerations to be given during alignment are traditional rivalries. You would want to keep as many of these traditional rivalries within divisional alignment so that teams can strengthen their non-conference games. It would make sense to keep Pitt/WVU in the same division and Army/Navy in the same division. You would probably also like to keep Notre Dame/Navy and maybe Cincy/Louisville together. Given that, the Old/New alignment would be best.

Here is a link to a map with demarcations for all four alignments.

Thinking Out Loud

So I've been giving some thought to the whole bowl vs playoff debate surrounding major college football.  Many would say a true championship playoff should include the best team from each conference.  This gives us 11 teams, not ideal for a playoff bracket.  You could add the best independent team, for 12 teams, but should we be rewarding non-conformers?  So you could add the 1 best ranked team, or even 5, to get to 12 or 16, but I've come up with a better solution.

In order to host a conference championship, a conference must be comprised of 12 or more teams.  In the current alignment of 11 conferences, 5 have championships, 6 do not.  Simply stated, the 5 conferences with a championship would send their crowned champion to the national championship bracket.  The other 6 conferences would have to play each other for the remaining 3 spots.

Using my ranking system, those 6 teams would be placed in a separate regional bracket to be played the same weekend of the conference championships at neutral locations.  The highest ranked team plays the lowest ranked team and inward from there like a normal bracket.  The winners of these 3 games get placed into the national championship bracket.

The national bracket is then seeded highest ranked versus lowest ranked and inward from there.  The first round of 4 games could be played on campus of the higher seed (or nearest pro stadium for additional seating) the week (maybe 2) after conference/regional championships.  The second round of 2 games would be played at neutral sites, possible traditional bowl locations, after/on January 1.  The championship game would be played the week after the second round at another neutral site, again, possibly a traditional bowl location.

There you have it.  3 weeks to determine your national champion.  You are only looking at a potential of 2 additional games for those schools advancing to the national championship.  3 if that school is from a non-conference championship conference.  Because of this, maybe the NCAA could go back to a mandated 11 game schedule.  This would mean a max of 12 games before national championship bracket starts and a max of 15 games for the 2 teams facing each other at the end of the season.  Right now the max gams is 14 if the eventual national champion comes from a conference championship conference.  Extending the season by 1-2 games should be nothing for players seeking NFL careers.  And if the NCAA, conferences and teams schedule games better and keep by weeks to a minimum, you could possibly have a week or 2 between conference/regional championship games and round 1 of national championship playoff.
