2017 Championship Weekend Wrap Up

With the conference championships completed and our mythical game between top independent school Notre Dame and conference championship-less Troy has a winner (Notre Dame of course), we can move on to a true championship bracket. The conference winners and Notre Dame would be ranked 1-10 according to their final season ranking. Two play-in games would have been played this weekend between 8/9 and 7/10 at the better seeds home stadium. Those winners would then travel to the home stadiums of the top 2 seeds while 4/5 and 3/6 would play at the better seeds home stadium.

For entertainment purposes, we will assume the two home teams win the play-in games. Toledo would travel to Clemson while Notre Dame travels to UCF. Georgia would host Ohio St and Oklahoma would host USC in quarterfinal games. These games would be contested the weekend of December 16. The four winners would have the weekend of December 23 off before returning to action January 1 for semifinal action. Those two winners would have a week to prepare for the championship game on January 8.

2017 Conference Championship Preview

Yes, we all know which teams are playing in the conference championships this weekend. However, we don't know the overall rank of some of the teams since no one ranks more than the top 25. My system ranks all teams. I've also added a bonus game for the weekend between the best independent team and the only conference without a championship. Of course, that is a mythical game as it won't be played, but it should be as it leads into my championship bracket.

No one views my blog so why should I put the effort in to stay current? So I haven't. Since this is the final regular-season CFP ranking, I decided I should at least put up my final ranking going into the conference championships. So enjoy and debate and we shall see how things shake out after championship weekend.

2016.11.13

I originally wasn't going to put any effort into my blog this year. I suppose I'm just getting to a point that it just doesn't matter in my life as much as it once did. But with three undefeated teams losing in the same week (my Pitt Panthers with the upset of #2 Clemson Tigers), I had to break out my rankings to view the comparison to the latest CFP ranking. So here it is...enjoy!

2015.12.14

So my Strength of Schedule source didn't have one ready after the Conference Championship games, so I had to wait until after the Army-Navy game to have all the data for my final rankings before bowl games begin. As usual, my rankings are very close to the College Football Playoff Committees. The only difference being they jumped Michigan State ahead of Oklahoma, simply because the Spartans participated in and won a conference championship game. Time for bowl mania to commence...

2015.11.29

Conference Championship games this weekend and Army/Navy December 12, but for all intents and purposes, next week's ranking will seal the top 4's fate. Should be interesting if Top 4 all win, if there is any movement in their final positioning for playoffs.

Right now, the CFP Committee has the two undefeated teams on one side of the bracket and the two one loss teams on the other. Could Iowa jump to 3 or even 2 with just a win or a convincing win over 5th ranked Michigan State? What happens if Alabama loses to Florida, do they drop from top 4? Could Florida leapfrog from 9 to 4? Could North Carolina move from 10 to 4 with win over Clemson? UNC's only loss was the first game of the season to a highly touted SEC conference team, albeit, it was 3-9 South Carolina.

Oklahoma is the only team without a Conference Championship game. That should solidify their Top 4 position for the playoffs as I don't see two teams leaping them in the final week. Needless to say it will be interesting.

If you don't approve of a committee picking the teams and would rather have a system like mine determine the Top 4, here is what you should route for.

UNC over Clemson
Florida over Alabama
Michigan State over Iowa (though no one seems to give them credit so maybe keep them in there.)
Stanford over USC (CFP has them within reach if Top 4 teams all loose.)
Houston over Temple (Houston is to low in CFP ranking, but I'd like to see how far they move in my ranking.)
