So which Bowls got it right and are deserving of your viewing time because the rankings of the teams are closely matched? Based on my ranking system only 3 Bowls got their match-ups correct, with a difference of -1.
1 Oregon 12 0 PAC10 BCS Title -1
2 Auburn 13 0 SEC BCS Title -1
21 South Carolina 9 4 SEC Chick-fil-A -1
22 Florida State 9 4 ACC Chick-fil-A -1
34 Miami (Fla.) 7 5 ACC Sun -1
35 Notre Dame 7 5 INDY Sun -1
And what about the other end of the spectrum. Which Bowls got it totally wrong either because of forced match-ups or just selecting on name?
19 Nebraska 10 3 BIG12 Holiday -39
58 Washington 6 6 PAC10 Holiday -39
30 Maryland 8 4 ACC Military -39
69 East Carolina 6 6 CUSA Military -39
12 Nevada 12 1 WAC Kraft Fight Hunger -41
53 Boston College 7 5 ACC Kraft Fight Hunger -41
So there you have the Top 3 and Worst 3 match-ups during the 2010-11 Bowl season. The team that got the biggest shaft is Nevada, who finished 12th in my poll (15th BCS) at 12-1, beat Boise State, but only drew Boston College (7-5) who finished 4th in the ACC Atlantic.
Now with that said, why are there 70 Bowl games? Why, after the NCAA increased the minimum number of games from 11 to 12, did the minimum number of wins remain at 6 to become bowl eligible and not increase to 7? We are now awarding mediocrity and .500 ball. And if you want to keep it at 6 wins, shouldn't teams with 8 wins get a Bowl game before a 6 win team? That's what Temple and Southern California are asking, who finished the year at 8-4 and 8-5 respectively and will be headed home for traditional semester break.
